We must admit, when we saw pictures of these pedals in 2010 we had our concerns that Shimano would release a keo clone. But Shimano has managed to keep all the key characteristics of the 7810 with this new model without falling victim to the ‘me too’ pressures. We’re in love.

The Shimano Dura-Ace 7900 Carbon SPD-SL is Shimano’s third generation 10 speed pedal. The most visible change is the use of carbon composite for the pedal body.

Shimano has long resisted the use of carbon in any of their products. In the last few years both Look and Time have advanced their respective technology and forced Shimano to re-evaluate its position. New for 2011, we have Shimano’s first production carbon pedal.

The carbon composite body allows Shimano to shave 30 grams off the 7810 weight and get their pedals much closer to similarly priced Look and Time pedals. The body is molded onto an aluminum sleeve which houses the three bearings. In contrast both Look and Time allow their bearings to touch the composite pedal body. Shimano believes the aluminum provides a better contact surface for the bearings. Shimano fans will be happy to know this keeps that uniquely Shimano feel on an otherwise very different material.

The 7900 carbon pedals retain much of the 7810 qualities; wide platform body, silky smooth 3 bearings system, replaceable stainless steel wear plate, and adjustable tension. Cleats are unchanged.
