The San Marco Zoncolan is a new saddle for San Marco, and is
named after the famous Monte Zoncolan in Italy.
Monte Zoncolan is arguably one of the most difficult climbs
in Europe. If you watched the 2007 Giro d’Italia you saw them climb it in stage 7,
where the group finished up hill. The climb averages an 11.5% grade for 6
miles, and has heart pounding 20% grade for a half mile in the middle. If you
thought there were flat sections to help you rest, there are none. Only one
section is less than 4%, making this entirely uphill, and not for the faint of
heart.
Though no official release from San Marco would indicate
that this saddle is intended solely for climbing you cannot overlook the name.
It’s obvious it is to be associated with intense, aggressive riding. Italian
company, Italian made, and Italian mountain. Zoncolan.
For riders who slide back on their saddle trying to squeeze
out every last watt, this saddle is for you. The rear of the saddle is
considerably different than previous San Marco saddles. The rear is simply
huge, in comparison to the nose; ideal for sliding back on the saddle.
The San Marco Zoncolan has good, firm San Marco padding,
covered in real perforated leather, mounted on Titanium rails. Ride quality is
great.
