Sigma, the Mercedes Benz of the cycling world, has turned out some nice computers in their many years of service. In fact, they are rated one of the highest quality computer manufacturers in the bike industry. Each product goes through rigorous testing to make sure it is road ready. So nice when a company takes it upon themselves to beat up their own product to make it better, so we don’t have to.
In the wide world of “cyclocomputers”, the BC 1606L boasts one of the largest screens on the market. The display is nice and big with super big numbers so you can get your stats at a glance. And easy buttons so you’re not reprogramming it accidently while cruising down Deadman’s Curve. There are seven language settings so if you want to pretend you’re riding the Tour De France, you can switch to French to get yourself more in the mood.
Sure, you get all the basics, average speed, max speed, current speed, clock, countdown, odometer, speed comparator, stop watch and trip distance. All with no wires to contend with. We liked the wireless aspect. Keeps it clean! And clean is good! We did notice that the batteries didn’t last as long as we’d like, (perhaps the back light was left on too long, oops.) but the good news is the Sigma BC1606L has a nifty memory function so if you have to change the battery your long term info will be saved (total mileage, setup info, etc). Fortunately, the BC 1606L DTS has a low battery indicator so you can change them BEFORE they die on a ride.
Installation is quick and easy, shouldn’t take you more than 15-20 minutes and you’re on the road. Get a second sensor and you can switch between bikes with ease. All around, it’s a great little computer that is durable and does the job well.
Side note: As with all wireless computers, setting the sensor just right can take patience. But once you’ve got it, you’ve got it. So hang in there!
