Perhaps you’ve been looking around at our handlebar selection and you think to yourself, what is the difference between the ITM Draco 04 carbon bar and the ITM Draco 05 carbon bar.  Both are made of durable high fiber carbon, both are designed for aggressive riders, both are made with EPS technology so they are both super strong and durable.  So what’s the difference?

The difference is in the drops and the tops.  The 04 has minimal retraction and lowering of grip points on the tops.  But the Draco 05 has a high ergonomic wing-section grip with anatomic shape.  Both are fine handlebars made with EPS technology.

Quick EPS lesson:  The EPS system leaves a clean interior, free of any additional substance (like plastic bladders).   What they do is wrap a reverse mold with the carbon and then cure it (lots of heat).  That part is pretty standard.  However, ITM sends the Draco 04, Draco 05, and the Pathom through a secondary baking process designed to remove the excess modeling agents so you have a full carbon, with no other stuff, bar.  This process also allows ITM to produce the bar with differentiated thicknesses providing a safe, constant, and controlled distribution of stress point concentrations. In other words, the EPS system allows ITM to build their bars to be thicker at the stem clamp where it needs some bulk, yet thinner on the hoods where you don’t need so much material.  What you get is a strong, stiff, and very safe bar because there are no worries about air pockets forming like there are in some of the other handlebar making methods.

The top of the bars rise up from the stem with a wing-like design.  The deeper drop of 168mm is great for those riders who whale down on the bars to steady themselves for that hard pumping on the hills and the sprints.  It’s not quite as long as the Draco 04’s 173mm, but it is still plenty long.  The reach on the Draco 05 is definitely not for small hands as it is quite long at 116mm.   The bend is the traditional anatomical bend with flat spots in the drops so your fingers can easily hit those shifters.  Plus, the anatomic shape provides comfort for extended periods in the drop position.

The one thing about all three ITM carbon bars is that the weight isn’t as low as they could get it.  For good reason too!  ITM decided that for a few extra grams, they would make sure that their handlebars are the stiffest, strongest, and safest bars on the market today.   And they definitely succeeded.
