Continental Grand Prix 4000 S Tires

The Continental Grand Prix 4000 S clincher tire has packed quite the punch. The Continental 4000 S uses a black chili compound that greatly reduces rolling resistance and improves grip. The black chili compound has small carbon particles that are the key behind what makes the Continental 4000 S such an amazing clincher tire. The tiny carbon particles improve tread life, grip and rolling resistance. Because of how small the particles are, Continental was able to pack more in the Continental 4000 S. The more carbon particles in touch with the ground, the better the tire can grip it, in fact the Black Chili compound helps the tire have 30% more grip and 26% less rolling resistance!

The Continental 4000 S
uses the Vectran found in the Grand Prix 4000 to make it ultra puncture resistant. Vectran is a yarn made from melted Vectra Liquid Crystal Polymer. The fibers in Vectran are lightweight, durable, have a long lifetime and are five times stronger than steel. Continental puts a layer of the Vectran under the tread to protect from punctures and flats. The Vectran is move effective than the Nylon Double Breaker because one Vectran layer is lighter, more flexible and stronger than two nylon layers. The Vectran is the only Liquid Crystal Polymer in the world.

Just like sheets, the higher thread count in tires means it is of a better build quality. Continental uses the highest thread count per inch on their Continental 4000 S tire. It has a 330TPI count, which means the threads of the tire have been very tightly threaded. The tight threads increase the puncture resistance and in combination with the Vectran layer and the black chili compound, the Continental 4000 S is the best race tire made today. It is a very fast tire and the best in grip. The high thread per inch count is higher than the Vittoria Open Pave Evo CG or the Vittoria Open Corsa Evo CX, making it more puncture resistant and an overall better tire than either of Vittoria’s high thread count tires.

Continental recommends inflating the tires to 110 psi, but the tire has a max psi of 120 pounds. The tire has an anti-aging compound and tread wear indicators. When the indicators disappear and become one with the tire, it’s time to get new tires. The Continental 4000 S has an estimated tread life of 2500-4000 miles and is the ideal tire for racers. The Continental 4000 S is super lightweight, weighing in at 205 grams for the 700x23 size. Though this isn’t the lightest clincher tire (The Veloflex Corsa Tire weighs in at 180 grams for the 700x22 size), it has the best puncture resistance, highest TPI and greatest grip of any tire on the market. If you’re ready for a tire that does it all, look no further than the Continental 4000 S. This clincher is the best one you will ever ride and if you haven’t given it a try already, you are really missing out.

Continental still makes the Continental 4000 Sin Germany by hand.
